Crystal membrane driver

The crystal membrane of BS 312 is based on ELAC’s Aluminum-Sandwich AS Technology. The crystal-shaped inverse aluminum dome is linked to the paper cone in a specific gluing process to lead to the desire sandwich build. Resembling the surface of a large crystal, the aluminum-foil stamping stiffens the aluminum dome, diminishing resonances and minimizing coloration, while improving power handling and dynamics. The voice coil design of the driver results in an expanded frequency range, and driver surround allows for longer cone excursions for truly prodigious volume and lowest distortion, a unique engineering achievement for a driver of its size.

JET 5 tweeter

Delivering true high-definition sound, ELAC’s JET 5 tweeter used in the BS 312 thrills with its rapid response and broad dynamic range offering lowest distortion, plenty of headroom and a distinguishably wider frequency range than standard dome tweeters. ELAC JET tweeter is one of the most legendary tweeters in the industry winning international acclaim for its transparent and simple sound image.

JET tweeter was developed to perfection based on the famous Air Motion Transformer which employs a concertinaed-foil membrane driven by a robust magnet system of neodymium rods. This motor moves air considerably faster than the pistonic motion of a conventional driver with gains in higher sensitivity and extraordinary dynamics. Higher efficiency, SPLs and frequency response up to 50kHz is achieveable.

The core of the JET tweeter is the 0.84mm folded foil membrane. Repeated accuracy is guaranteed via the use of two SCARA robots for the gluing and handling. The folding and fixing is executed by hand for extreme precision that only skilled technicians can acheive. JET 5 tweeter creates an effortless, airy and resonance-free imaging with a linear frequency response suited to the reproduction of DVD-A and SACD.

Bass reflex port

The bass port of the BS 312 is a patented design feature. Flared on both sides, the double-flare port is designed to lower ventilation noises and to reduce friction losses of traditional ported cabinets.

Bass control

The sound of loudspeakers is greatly influenced by room-acoustics. Room shape and furnishings may offer less than ideal conditions for the optimum set-up of the loudspeakers resulting in bass reproduction that may be too strong. Closing the bass reflex port compensates for unwanted acoustic conditions when speakers are installed close to a wall.

When bass is too prominent, ELAC Bass Control plug can improve the bass reproduction by lowering the low frequency output. Just insert one or both of the provided plugs into the bass port until bass is at the correct level compared to the midrange and treble.

Magnetic shielding

With the cinema-friendly BS 302, you can watch TV with no distorted color. Magnetic shielding enables installation next to CRT screens or devices with hard drives sensitive to magnets without generating interference.
